Mrs. Roberta O’Neal, affectionately known at “Miss Toot” was born November 14, 1919 to the union of the late Alphonsy and Mable Clay in Autauga County, Alabama. She accepted Christ as her Savior at an early age and later joined Ward Chapel AME Church in Prattville, Alabama.
She was married to the late Reverend Grady O’Neal, Sr. and to this union three children were born.
Sister O’Neal loved Ward Chapel and she served faithfully. She served as class leader for several decades and sung in the senior choir for over 65 years.
She received her Cosmetology Certification from Booker T. Washington Adult School in 1957. Upon completion, she opened one of the first black owned beauty shops in Prattville, Alabama. Also, during her career, she worked many years for the Autauga County School System and for Prattville Apparel.
“Miss Toot” could always be counted on to cook and deliver meals for the sick and shut in WHENEVER needed. She continued to do this until her late 80’s. One of her most treasured memories was her 100th Birthday celebration at Ward Chapel AME Church in November 2019. She talked for weeks about how all the people came out for her birthday celebration. This truly meant a lot to her! Whenever she became excited, one of her favorite expressions was “MY LAND!”
Sister O’Neal peacefully transitioned, to her heavenly home on Tuesday August 10, 2021. She was preceded in death by her husband: Reverend Grady O’Neal, Sr.; Brothers: Lee Bunyon Cain and Richard Clay; Sister: Rebecca Bennett; and Grandson: Darryl Chapman.
She leaves to cherish her memories three children: Rebecca Ann Rollins of Orlando, Florida; Grady (Rita) O’Neal of Madison, Alabama; Michael O’Neal of Prattville, Alabama; Sister-in-law: Christine Clay of Cleveland, Ohio; Grandchildren: Syrita (Curtis) Lee of Madison, Alabama; Jevon (Amaka) O’Neal of Huntsville, Alabama; Eric Chapman and Corey (Selida) Chapman of Orlando, Florida; Nine great grandchildren; a host of loving and caring nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
